Siger Enoch Holmes (born August 11th, 1942) is a formidable figure in the world of politics. Former Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (more commonly known as the Foreign Secretary), then later Chief Whip (Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasury), Siger received a knighthood for his contributions to politics. Though he didn't manage his ultimate aim - to become Prime Minister - he still achieved an outstanding record over his years in the Cabinet.
Recently called out of full time retirement to help with party issues in Westminster, Siger has not softened over the years. He is still every bit the cold, calculating, cut-throat man he always was, and his colleagues are well aware of it. It is well known that it is not wise to double-cross this man - Siger Holmes being unafraid to retaliate with extreme measures if it means keeping his reputation intact.
It is debatable whether he cares for his own children or not. He certainly favours Mycroft over Sherlock, believing that his youngest is wasting his life with his foolish detective 'career' and harming the family name. However, at the end of the day, he cares for them in his own way - which is overbearing, manipulative, and includes degrading them for their own good.
Appearance
Siger Holmes is a balding, older man with brown hair and cold, grey eyes. Due to his age, it is safe to assume that he dyes his hair. He wears expensive clothes (typically in dark, cool tones) and a permanent scowl. Siger speaks with a Received Pronunciation account.
Family
The Holmes family is large, though Siger does not have a strong relationship with any of its members. He does not even have a strong relationship with his children.
Enoch and Florence Holmes
Siger's parents, both deceased. His father, Enoch, was equally as cold and distant towards him as he is towards his own children. His mother, Florence, was warmer. Enoch died early (when Siger was 26 years old) due to liver failure, and Florence moved to France. Siger would visit her occasionally, taking his children with him once they were born.
Rudolph Eldridge Holmes
Siger's brother, younger by two years. Rudolph runs a law firm, inherited from their father. He has a wife, Isabella, and a son, Algernon. Siger and Rudolph do not have a cold relationship, but it is not warm either. They are brothers and they are fond of each other, but they do not speak with each other regularly, nor do they feel any need to change that arrangement.
William Mortimer Holmes
Siger's cousin, the son of Enoch's younger brother. William was also a politician (now retired). At one point, both he and Siger were in the running to become leader of the party. They both got to the final two, but ultimately it was William that won. However, William never won the ultimate prize - the title of Prime Minister. He has a gambling addiction, especially when it comes to horse racing.
Violet Sylvie Holmes (née Beaumont)
Siger's ex-wife. They are divorced, having quickly fallen out of love, and she has since remarried, but she has kept Holmes as her last name due to it being the name that all of her work is published under. Violet was a codebreaker for MI6 when she first met Siger, but she gave it up to raise their children. Later, she began publishing mathematics books and papers. These quickly became popular among academic circles. For the majority of their relationship, Siger was cheating on her.
Mycroft Siger Holmes
Siger's eldest, and favourite, son (though he still acts coldly towards him, as his own father did to him). He had great plans for Mycroft, pushing him early to follow in his footsteps and enter politics. Siger will always be disappointed that Mycroft did not do this, instead choosing to work in the intelligence services. No, it is not the worst career choice in the world, but it is not what Siger wanted from him. In addition to that, Siger is somewhat jealous of Mycroft's success. He knows what his son really does - he is too involved in high-level politics not to know - and he also knows that it is something that he would have never been able to achieve himself.
Sherlock William Holmes
Siger's second son. Sherlock is a disappointment to him. He believes that his son brings shame to the family name through his various public activities. It is one thing being a drug addict without a real job, it is another doing this when you are a public figure - because, as much as Siger resents it, Sherlock is a public figure. The blog discussing his 'work' is strangely popular, and he is frequently mentioned in newspaper articles.
Eurus Nicolette Holmes
Siger's youngest child. She is officially deceased. Though Siger is aware that she is actually alive, he does not care, not does he want anything to do with her. She has the potentially to be an even large bane on the family than Sherlock is, therefore he actively does not want to take an interest in her or her continued life.
Career
Siger Holmes, like any good Holmes son, studied law at Oxford. He worked at his father's law firm (which has now been taken over by his brother, Rudolph) for a year before quitting to become a politician. Able to easily put on a charming face to woo the public, he quickly rose through the ranks - finding himself a wife, Violet Holmes, along the way.
He became an MP before Mycroft, his eldest son, was born and remained in that position for a long time - his seat being a very safe one for his party. He held a few high-ranking roles within government before eventually becoming the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (more commonly known as the Foreign Secretary). This meant that he spent a lot of time away from home, even more so than usual due to his typical Holmes view of working as hard as he possibly could.
Siger held this role for four years before becoming the party's Chief Whip after the next election - a role he found himself incredibly good at, holding it for seven years before stepping down and taking a more advisory role.
He attempted to run for party leader a few times. The final time he ran he ended up in competition with his cousin, William, who eventually beat him.
Siger is now retired but, for his efforts, he was granted a knighthood, making him Sir Siger Holmes.
Public Image
The public perception of Siger is that he is highly competent, if somewhat aloof. He knows that reputation is everything, and so he has always worked hard to ensure that the public (or, at the very least, the public that had the potential to vote for him) saw him in a way that did not put them off him representing them in the House of Commons.
With those that know him, Siger has a reputation for being cold, ruthless, but highly competent. There are not many people that like Siger, but there are many that admire him. Ultimately, this was his downfall when it came to his attempts to become Prime Minister - his party recognised the strength of his political abilities, but the majority did not want to answer him. However, it was also what made him such a successful Cheif Whip. There were very few that were willing to ignore his instructions, and those that did soon regretted it.
Personal Life
Having retired from politics, Siger now spends his time at the family estate in Derbyshire, in London, or abroad. He enjoys the finer things in life and much of his time is dedicated to seeing the best sights, eating at the best restaurants, and so on. His enjoys his misanthropy, spending most of his time alone. That being said, he does also spend a decent amount of time catching up with old acquaintances. Even in retirement, Siger is very well connected.
While he has been enjoying his retirement, Siger does occasionally get called back to Whitehall to advise on certain matters - something that he agrees to without a second thought, eager to remind the new generation of politicians that he is still a force to be reckoned with.
